Today’s plumbing jobs:

• Unblocking a blocked drain

Customer called me out to unblock the gully outside which is connected to the bath and sink. Using.flex shaft k912 ftom ridgid allows me to push it down the hall and bend it around and attaching my drill. I can spin in forward and reverse which helps it manoeuvre round Bends and also clear the blockage.

With the manhole lifted i czn watch the blocksge come out and sorsy to clean the gully while making sure it can take the waste water at full flow!

• Fixing a plumbing leak

The next job I’ve been sent to a customer’s house because they have a leak underneath a kitchen sink. They did tape up some joints as they thought it was coming from there as well as the compression fitting above, but I’m pretty sure that where it’s coming from the fitting it’s dripping down the pipe.

This was a nice easy fix. I shut off the supply water to the house drained it from the kitchen sink tap and then using my foldable bucket from derblaue I can undo the join and release all the remaining water into it. Because this fitting was up against a shut off valve for the water heater and the connection was compromised anyway I decided to cut underneath it to put a new seal on the compression fit in and tighten it up with jointing compound.

I think this was leaking due to over tightening the joint as you can see that the olive has been crushed and no paste was applied in my opinion if it squeaks it’s gonna leak!

• Installing a new kitchen sink wastes

The customer also wanted me to replace the kitchen strainer wastes as they begin to be discoloured. This is simply done by undoing the bolt in the centre which then you can pull the waist out of the sink top. The old one has a thin washer which is normally foam these end up breaking down which eventually causes them to have a slow leak. I like to make mine in with silicon as it doesn’t degrade and also stops it from moving when it gets hot and cold and I installed a normal rubber underneath which keeps everything leak free.

I had to disconnect the traps to be able to get the new waist in and the old ones out and I replaced the rubber seal connecting onto the trap to the waste. This is a spare part that I always keep on the van so if and when you have to undo other pipe fittings.
