Over Engineered? Is REBAR 12 Inches on Center OVERKILL for Crawl Space Floors?

We're pouring a crawl space concrete floor, and the engineer specified a mat of rebar 12 inches on center for reinforcement.
In my opinion, that's way overkill and not necessary for a concrete floor that has no load bearing weight on it.
What's your opinion?
I'm not against using rebar or wire mesh in a concrete floor. I just think this much rebar for a concrete floor in this case is overkill.
We're going by the blue prints and I was paid to install the rebar mat, I'm just giving you my thoughts, and I think wire mesh would have been plenty good enough for this concrete floor.
Most of the residential concrete floors we pour in basements are specified with fibermesh only, and that has worked just fine for years.
I thought this would be a good video for debate, and I want to know your experiences and opinions so please share in the comments.

This video examines the use of dense rebar reinforcement, specifically 12 inches on center, within a residential crawlspace. Mike questions whether this level of concrete reinforcement is overkill for a space that won't be used as a basement. Check out the video and let us know what you think about the concrete slab!
