According to the National Fire Protection Association, or NFPA, there is an annual average of 24,200 home fires attributed to electrical distribution systems or lighting equipment. Each year, this causes 830 injuries, 320 deaths, and over $700 million in property damage.
In 1987, a study conducted by the U.S. CPSC, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, indicated that the frequency of fires in residential electrical systems was disproportionately high in homes that are more than 40 years old. There are several factors that come into play here. The disproportionally high incidence of fire in the electrical systems of older home can usually be attributed to one or more of the following… • Inadequate and overburdened electrical systems. (like Knob & Tube or woven wire) • Defeated or compromised over-current protection. (Such as old breaker panels -last 20 to 30 years) • Worn-out wiring devices are not being replaced. (switches & outlets should be replaced every 10 to 20 years) • Or poorly done electrical repairs by unqualified homeowners. (Like the “Honey Do” list that should be honey don’t)
