I used to directly place an automotive trim carpet over the car floor and mark it with a waxed pencil on its reverse side. After adding the required seam allowances I trimmed off the excess of material. The carpet is then sewn down on the reverse side to join several cuts I did.
To the present time I do the same process of trimming and sewing down. The only change is I have found very useful the use of butcher's wrapping paper to make a template for the car floor carpet. It helps me a lot because I save carpet material, besides, marks, cut of holes, etc. are premade in advance.
Believe it or not the templates are of precision and I can mark and do the required cuts on the new automotive carpet with much confidence.
